{"id":403,"date":"2005-08-22T08:18:00","date_gmt":"2005-08-22T16:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sixsquare.com\/?p=403"},"modified":"2005-08-22T08:18:00","modified_gmt":"2005-08-22T16:18:00","slug":"death-and-distraction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sixsquare.com\/index.php\/death-and-distraction\/","title":{"rendered":"Death and Distraction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sunset in San Luis Obispo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sixsquare.com\/blog\/images\/0805\/slosunset.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I want to post on a subject that the latest issue of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utne.com\/\">Utne Reader<\/a> explores a bit this month, which is the question of how we, as human beings, live our lives day to day with the full realization that we will one day die.<\/p>\n<p>I want to write about how I&#8217;m both terrifed and intensely curious about that final exit, about how that contradiction permeates everything I write.<\/p>\n<p>I want to write about how adept we are at sidestepping the reality of death, how we are so good at denying it, about how we&#8217;re so good at keeping ourselves distracted.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>But wait, check this out: the world&#8217;s biggest Funyun!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Funyuns!\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sixsquare.com\/blog\/images\/0805\/funyun.jpg\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"eep!\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sixsquare.com\/blog\/images\/0805\/funyun2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We find it in a bag of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fritolay.com\/fl\/flstore\/cgi-bin\/products_funyuns.htm\">Funyuns<\/a>, so we&#8217;re pretty sure it was meant to be a Funyun itself, but somehow evaded the big slicing blade that cuts the dough into onion-like shapes. To some, seeing this is like getting a glimpse into the slaughterhouse. &#8220;So this is where our food comes from!&#8221; To some, it&#8217;s a sobering reminder of the truth behind those packaged foods we take for granted.
